My internet fast, as it were is not a complete fast, as much as a winnowing of too much time spent.
I have not gone on facebook or spent time surfing.
I have posted to my blog, read comments, read/written emails, followed a few art-related links, and mostly just saved them to my bookmarks. I have posted photos and have ordered some art supplies. All art related stuff, and it feels good to have some control over the time spent.
Still, I think I need to move to the next level. Even with this mission, I have not stayed away, or gained as much time as I’d like. I’ve also not accomplished much more than before.
As I’ve pondered and talked to my mentor, I think I need to go beyond this, and really make a strick rule for myself about when and how I will go online. Having my computer on, and connected at all times means it’s way too easy for me to take a quick gander at email, or whatever. And invariably, instead of 2 minutes, it becomes 15 minutes, if I’m not careful. So, the next step is to actually turn off the computer.
I think that is what will happen from tomorrow on. I will check my email in the morning, along with any blog comments, and address them if I want/should, and turn off the computer. I might then turn it back on after the boys are in bed, to check one more time. With the computer turned off, it will be easier to stay away. Let’s see if that helps…
A woman from the new church asked me on wednesday about why I had not been to facebook. She concurred that she, too, has a hard time accomplishing things she’d like to do because of it. I hope that this helps me, and her and whoever takes time to examine how they are spending their time.
I hope I will be more productive, and closer to God because of it.
